I am curious. Are you the type of person to use a bookmark? Do you just memorize the page number? Or, do you dog ear the pages?
I have quite the collection of bookmarks, yet I never use any of them! They are really nice ones too, from the many author visits I’ve attended.
I typically just look at the page number before closing my book. Bookmarks are such a hassle, but then again, so is having to remember where you left off. Do any of you do this too?
How do you keep track of your place whilst reading? Do you have any super cool bookmarks? I would love to hear all about it!

I use bookmarks, but I also remember the last page I was on. One of the things I hated about bookmarks was losing them in my bag, so now I’ve switched to magnetic ones :p and I have a lot, because I like to collect them.

I didn’t think about magnetic bookmarks! I misplace my bookmarks as well, so that’s one of the reasons I don’t use them. I might have to try some magnetic ones.

HAHAHA I’m not XD I don’t use bookmarks, because I just tend to forget to use them! I can manage to track the last page I read quite well on my own 🙂

I forget to use them too! And then I lose them, so it is just easier to not even bother in the first place.

I used to dog-ear a lot, and still do if I forget my bookmark, but I recently switched over to bookmarking when I’m not reading on my Kindle. I found a Doctor Who Van Gogh themed bookmark at Barnes and Noble and couldn’t say no 😉

Oh no, the dreaded dog-ear. It’s okay, I won’t judge. I think dog-earing is pretty practical, even if doesn’t leave the pages looking as pristine. I want to see a picture of your bookmark! That sounds so perfect.

I NEED and LOVE my bookmarks, haha. I have a collection of about 30, but only really use about two or three. I used to choose the bookmark I’d used based off the genre of the book, and what the book was about, but that turned out to be far too consuming for just picking a bookmark, haha.
I NEVER dog-ear pages, because it means that I’m ruining the book, and my books need to be in perfect condition 😛
I have a terrible memory when it comes to numbers, so taking note of the page number has never worked for me.
I would love to have some signed bookmarks, but so far I don’t have any! Maybe one day 😀

Thirty bookmarks? That’s impressive! Your system sounds so complicated, but I think it is pretty cool how you would choose a bookmark based off the genre.
I don’t really mind when people dog-ear pages, but for me, I couldn’t ever do that to a book I like. If it was a non-fiction, then maybe.
It can be a little difficult to remember where I left off, but usually I don’t really think about it. I just sort of flip to the right spot. Kind of weird, I guess.
I get most of my bookmarks from author events. Maybe the next time I do a giveaway, I will include some brand-spanking newly signed bookmarks. 😉

I know! If I see a pretty one, I just kind of have to have it, haha.
The system was complicated, so I gave it up, sadly. but it was fun while it lasted!
I just hate defacing my previous lovelies D:
You must have awesome book vibes, then. I always end up reading a chapter and thinking: hey, I think I’ve read this! Haha.
That sounds awesome 😀 I just got a few signed bookmarks in the mail from Ruth Silver, so I officially have a signed bookmark now 😀 YAY!

Fear of damaging my bookmarks is another reason I don’t use them and just have them laying about. I completely understand not wanting to deface them.
I’m not going to lie: I have started to read a chapter only to pretty much finish it and think, wait a second, I just reread this!
😀 Signed bookmarks are such lovely gifts! I am so happy you got some of your very own.

HAHA, of course! It happens to the best of us 😛

I NEED a bookmark. I can’t do what you do because my mind does not work that way. I have amassed quite the collection of bookmarks over the years but I really only use a third of them. Some of them are just too pretty to use! All my bookmarks get banged up after a few books so I suppose it makes sense why I would want to keep them in their perfect form!
Arial at In Italics
September 29, 2013 at 11:17 am
I don’t really think about how I look at the page number before closing the book. It’s sort of second-nature. I guess since I never used bookmarks, I don’t now.
Some bookmarks are certainly too pretty to use! I just want to look at them or display them, instead of hiding them away in the book. And if the bookmark isn’t pretty heavy duty, I end up bending it, which drives me crazy too!

I have always used bookmarks, I can’t fold the page or anything like that, and I have never been able to memorize the page number! If I can’t find a bookmark I simply tear a corner from a piece of paper and use that! I had this really cool bookmark with a tassel that hangs out, but the tassel broke, really makes me mad! 😦

I guess since I haven’t always used bookmarks, I have just gotten used to looking at the page number. I am so sorry to hear your bookmark met such a tragic fate! I guess this gives you an excuse to find another?

I am the “use-anything-as-a-bookmark” kind of person. I often use scrap paper and postcards as bookmarks. It is pretty weird because I have bookmarks, but they’re never around. I will not dog-ear books though. Never.
Arial at In Italics
September 29, 2013 at 11:22 am
Bookmarks are never around when we need them! Even when I keep them in the book when I’m reading, they magically vanish. I think your using eclectic bookmarks is pretty neat. I love when I lose little scraps of paper in a book only to find it again when I reread it.
I know that dog-earing books is a sin to most book lovers, but it doesn’t bother me THAT much. While I don’t personally do it, it doesn’t make me upset either. 🙂

I wish there were many author visits in Indonesia *sigh* I love using bookmarks as I am too lazy to remember the page (haha) plus, it wouldn’t ruin the book so I always use them 😛 Your bookmarks are lovely!! Now I wanna make bookmarks by myself!!

DOGEARED BOOKS. My heart always breaks a little when I see books like that. I mean, I know that books are meant to be read and loved, but I prefer to love them without damaging their pages. Though… there was a time when I used to fold pages to mark where I’d stopped. I have no idea why I did that. All I know is that my parents used to scold me for bending pages. Ah, well.
That’s why I put my huge collection of bookmarks to good use! I’ve got a box full of them, thanks to a wonderful blogging friend of mine. I tried memorizing the pages where I stopped once, but gah. Too much stuff swimming in my head for anymore info, unfortunately. 😦

Don’t hate me for this, but… dog-eared pages don’t really bother me much! I don’t like the look of all the pages being bent, but if it works, it works! I do love when books are kept in tip top shape though.
I would love to see your bookmark collection one day! I always think I have a lot, but it sure sounds like you have way more than I do! I don’t even think about how I memorize the page anymore. It’s just something I do while reading without thinking about it.

Curses to those who dog ear the pages!
I usually just grab whatever paper type thing is nearest to me to use as a bookmark. This is usually a TBD bookmark, because I have about a hundred of those haha. But it could just be a scrap piece of paper or a receipt or one of my dad’s business cards (there’s a massive stack of them near my desk, so it’s just too convenient to grab these :P)

The dog-ear pages are sure getting lots of hate! I do love when a book is kept all nice with sharp edges, but if dog-earing is what you do, then I say go for it!
I think I would use bookmarks more if I did what you did and just grabbed the nearest paper object as a bookmark. I forget to grab a bookmark before I sit down to read, but there is always a scrap of paper lying about.

Um…I dog ear pages! My own copies though. I have a nice collection of bookmarks and I don’t use them. Of course signed bookmarks I don’t use (those go straight into a box), but it’s rare I use a bookmark. I was given a really nice metal bookmark years ago, but I find it throws the spine of a book out of line so I don’t it use.
Arial at In Italics
September 30, 2013 at 7:24 am
I won’t judge you for your dog-earing ways! I know what it’s like to have a whole slew of bookmarks that go unused. I don’t like to use my signed bookmarks either because I want to keep them pristine. I never thought about how too heavy of a bookmark could mess with the spine.

I use post-it notes! I used to love bookmarks, but they always ended up falling out and frustrating me. Post-it’s always stay right where I need them! And I can jot down something if I need to!

That’s a pretty fantastic idea! I always tell myself that I should be making actual notes instead of just mental ones. Maybe if I just kept post-its as bookmarks I would do it more often!

I also love bookmarks and like to collect but I also use them when I am reading a book. I don’t think I could ever remember the page number because I am bad about starting a book then putting it down for awhile reading another book (or two or three) and then going back to it.

I don’t think I can handle reading two or three books at once! But I can definitely see your need for bookmarks if you do read multiple books at once.

I used to dog ear my books *ducks flying projectiles from fellow readers* I know I shouldn’t have! Then I started using bookmarks, and I still do most of the time, though I also just remember the page number I’m on sometimes too. And I do collect bookmarks!

Don’t fear any projectiles! I won’t judge. I can understand dog-earing pages, but bookmarks are a much kinder option. I remember the page number instead of using a bookmark.

I’m a bookmark person. I don’t really use bookmarks though- I’ll use whatever I have. Recently, I’ve been using my student ID as a bookmark. I feel bad dog earing and my memory is too terrible to remember pages.

I hadn’t though about how some people would use nontraditional bookmarks! I think I would use bookmarks more often if I just used what I had lying about to mark pages. That way my student ID would finally have a purpose!

I used to never use bookmarks and would just memorize the page, but then I started attending some author events and discovered book swag. Now nothing makes me more happy than having a bookmark that matches my book! I’m drooling over your Shatter Me and MILA 2.0 bookmarks– they’re gorgeous!
I also have a collection of metal bookmarks with ribbons in different colors from B&N. I’ve become quite a bookmark collector!

Well, most of the time I read ebooks on my Kobo, so I don’t have to worry because my Kobo saves the page for me! 🙂 But, when I do read physical books, I always use some sort of bookmark. Now, it might not actually be a real bookmark…I might just grab any piece of paper that may be laying around lol. But, I couldn’t imagine remembering the page number! My memory is not good enough for that! Haha.

October 6, 2013 at 12:14 pm
That is mighty convenient!
A bookmark is a bookmark, right? 😀 I think if I used scraps of paper like you, then I would use bookmarks more often. It’s easier just to grab whatever is laying about! I wouldn’t say my memory is too good. For me, “remembering the page number” is more of flipping around until I find where I left off.

I am addicted to using bookmarks. I generally have a lot of programming books and reference books to juggle around which makes it necessary. Also, where I live, there is an uncanny lack of bookmarks for sale even in book stores and stationary supply stores. I tend to use most of the playing cards (ranging from Pokemon to standard playing cards) lying around. I like to keep such decks of cards everywhere I would read a book, from my car’s glove compartment to my backpack.
My life without them would be quite a mess!
Arial at In Italics
October 26, 2013 at 3:31 pm
Programming and reference books seem like they demand bookmarks. I don’t think I could keep all of the information in them straight and still remember the page number. It’s a shame that you don’t have lots of bookmarks for sale where you live. Though, from the comments of everyone else, sometimes it seems like the unconventional bookmarks (like Pokemon cards) make the best place holders.
